This feast commemorates the Dedication of the Basilica of the Resurrection, built by Saint Helena in Jerusalem in AD 355, as well as  the finding of the actual Cross on which Our Lord was crucified. The true Cross was found during excavations ordered by Saint Helena, aimed at removing pagan structures around the site of the new Basilica. Its finding was accompanied by miraculous healings. Relics of the true Cross were eventually made and sent to various churches throughout Christendom.

The ikon above shows the presentation of the true Cross by Bishop Macarius in front of the Basilica of the Resurrection. On the left, Saint Helena presents the Cross to her son, the Emperor Constantine. This ancient feast has long been celebrated by both the Latin and Eastern Churches.
