Rorate Mass of Advent

The early-morning candlelit “Rorate Mass” of Advent will be offered at 7 a.m. on Saturday, December 15.

This Mass of Our Lady begins with the words Rorate caeli (Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the Just One). In the Middle Ages, it was said by candlelight only very early in the morning as a symbol of the light of Christ entering into the darkness of Advent through the Motherhood of Mary. This beautiful liturgy is esteemed particularly as part of the patrimony of the German-speaking peoples.

We will have a High Mass this year, with candles distributed in the foyer of the church.

“Our Catholic Faith” class on Saturday

Our multimedia course on the basics of our Catholic faith takes place on Saturdays from 10 to 11:45 a.m. in the hall. The course will run until mid-March and is open to non-Catholics and Catholics alike. In addition, any adults thinking about Baptism or Confirmation are warmly invited to speak with Fr. Deprey for more information.

Topic for December 15: Grace and Divine Life, Part 2.

Gaudete Sunday social, raffle, and silent auction

On Sunday, December 16, our parish will be having its annual fun and festive Gaudete Sunday luncheon, talent show, raffle, and silent auction after the 10:30 High Mass. It has been reported that St. Nicholas plans to come too!

Raffle and silent auction: fundraising to support seminarians

All monies raised from the raffle and silent auction will go directly to the support of Canadian seminarians at the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Nebraska. (The cost to operate the seminary comes to around $27,000 per seminarian per year, a significant portion of which is provided by friends of the Fraternity.)

There are three raffle prizes:

  • The first prize will be a beautifully framed limited-edition print titled “Gardens beyond Spring Gate,” by the artist Thomas Kinkade (1958-2012), valued at approximately $2,250 and generously donated by Art Image Gallery, Vancouver.
  • The second prize will be another framed print, valued at $200.
  • The third prize will be a gift basket with wine, chocolates, and a Milestones restaurant gift card worth $150.

Snowshoeing adventure

Join fellow parishioners, friends, and Fr. Deprey for some snowshoeing at Cypress Mountain for two hours on Boxing Day, Wednesday, December 26. We will depart from the church parking lot at 11 a.m.

At Cypress, we will be given rental snowshoes and tickets and be guided along trails; this will be followed by hot chocolate and a cookie. Total cost is about $38. (Please note: the guided tour is meant for adults or those who can keep up with adults on the trail.)

Can you help us carpool? Please let us know, as some people may need a ride.

Reservations are required by Thursday, December 20. For more details, please contact Mary at 604-379-2023, or click here to email her.
