On 28 December 2010, Archbishop Miller visited Holy Family to perform the ceremony of consecration of the altar stone for our new High Altar.

1. Archbishop Miller, flanked by Father Geddes and Father Deprey, approaches the new High Altar at the beginning of the ceremony.

2. Archbishop Miller preaching at the new lectern.

3. Blessing the water, salt, ashes and wine for the blessing and sealing of the altar stone.

4. This image of the blessing shows the new High Altar, hand made of red oak by Mister Vince Ferrer of Fynderskeepers Brokerage.

5. After Archbishop Miller has placed the relics of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr and Saint Sebastian the Martyr beneath the new altar stone, Father Geddes seals the stone in place using cement mixed with Gregorian water (a combination of exorcised water, exorcised salt, ashes from the palms of Palm Sunday, and blessed wine).

6. Watched by Archbishop Miller and the Holy Family clergy, servers light fire to the incense and wax crosses placed on the new altar stone. The five engraved crosses on the altar stone, representing the five principal wounds that Our Lord received on the cross, were first anointed with chrism, and then had incense and beeswax crosses placed in them. These then burn, representing the glorious nature of Christ’s wounds after His resurrection.

In the latest stage of renovations of the sanctuary at Holy Family parish, the crucifix that previously was located directly over the high altar has been moved and hung above the sanctuary, and in its previous position has been hung a new painting of the Holy Family by Michal Janek, and gilt has been applied to the wood of the reredos. In addition to being moved, the crucifix has been refurbished and the corpus painted. On 14 September, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, His Grace Archbishop Miller made a pastoral visit to Holy Family and blessed the crucifix.

For comparison, see the photographs from the inaugural Mass, two years ago.

With the earlier replacement of the sanctuary floor, these renovations enrich the liturgical space and, hence, the worship of God. Future plans include altar frontals, and a permanent replacement for the current temporary altar rail.

Father Charles Ryan, former pastor of this community, performs the imposition of hands on Father Huang’s head during the ordination service. Following the imposition of hands by Bishop Bruskewitz, all the priests present laid their hands on each of the ordinandi. As well as receiving this sign from his former pastor and teacher, Father Huang was also blessed to receive the imposition of hands from his younger brother, Father Justin Huang, a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Vancouver who is now studying to become a diplomat at the Vatican.

The selection of photographs below, all taken by Benjamin Laggui, show scenes at the Holy Family 60th anniversary Mass, celebrated on Sunday 9 November. As well as celebrating the original establishment of this parish and its decades of care by and for Vancouver’s Catholic German community, this was an opportunity to recognise Father Benno Burghardt’s thirty years of service as pastor of the parish on the occasion of his 75th birthday and retirement. Both Vancouver’s archbishopswere in attendance.

A larger selection of photos is available here.

1. Before the Mass. The Celebrant, Father Erik Deprey FSSP, waits to enter the church behind the Knights of Columbus honour guard.

2. The Archbishops enter the church. On the left, His Grace Michael Miller CSB, Coadjutor Archbishop of Vancouver; on the right, His Grace Raymond Roussin SM, Archbishop of Vancouver.

3. The Asperges. Father Deprey, flanked by his fellow FSSP priests, Father Joseph Bisig (l) and Father Daniel Geddes (r), casts holy water on the congregation.

4. A rare peek behind the scenes. The thurifer prepares a hot coal for the incense.

5. The Gospel. In the role of Deacon, Father Bisig reads the Gospel in the traditional position facing North, while the Archbishops and Father William Ashley, long-time friend of the traditional Mass in Vancouver, look on.
