Prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family

Jesus, our most loving Redeemer, Who having come to enlighten the world with Thy teaching and example, didst will to pass the greater part of Thy life in humility and subjection to Mary and Joseph in the poor home of Nazareth, thus sanctifying the Family that was to be an example for all Christian families, graciously receive our family as it dedicates and consecrates itself to Thee this day. Do Thou protect us, guard us and establish amongst us Thy holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by living according to the divine pattern of Thy family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness.

Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by thy kindly intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings.

Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, help us by thy prayers in all our spiritual and temporal needs; that so we may be enabled to praise our divine Saviour Jesus, together with Mary and thee, for all eternity. Amen.

Conclude with Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be three times.

Patronal Feast Day and Parish Celebration

The feast of the Holy Family, our patronal feast, falls on Sunday 10 January. The schedule of services will follow the regular Sunday schedule, and there will be a potluck celebration after the 10:30 am High Mass.

The parish will be providing ham for the potluck, so we ask those who will be attending to sign up on the sheet found in the foyer of the church, or contact the church office. Please provide your name, phone number, and the number of people coming with you so that we can provide enough ham for all. We ask that you bring enough other food to share, so there will be sufficient food for all.

Guest Speaker
Mr Pierre Lemieux, Conservative MP for the riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell (Ottawa), will give a talk at our Feast Day Potluck. He is a member of Saint Clement Parish in Ottawa (FSSP), and the only Member of Parliament who regularly attends the Traditional Latin Mass. He will speak about how his Catholic faith led him and his family into politics, and the opportunities that have arisen to defend and promote life, marriage, and family as an MP. The 30-minute talk will take place just after the meal, before or during dessert and coffee. We think you will find his presentation quite interesting. He will make himself available for questions afterwards.

Epiphany of Our Lord

Wednesday 6 January
7:30 am Low Mass
7:30 pm Solemn High Mass

The visit of the Magi

The Solemnity of the Epiphany commemorates three manifestations (?????????) of the Divinity of Christ to man: to the Magi in Bethlehem, following His birth; to Saint John the Baptist at His Baptism; and to the Jews with His first public miracle at the wedding feast in Cana. All three of these manifestations are referenced in the Mass readings and divine office of the Church on this day, although the visit of the Magi is the major focus for Latin Catholics. In the Eastern Churches, where the feast is called the Theophany—‘divine manifestation’’—, the focus is on the revelation of Our Lord as the Messiah and Second Person of the Trinity at the time of His baptism.

In both West and East, house blessings are a traditional feature of Epiphany time. Blessed chalk is made available in the entrance of the church, and you  may take this away to inscribe the traditional blessing formula in your home. Like holy water, the blessed chalk is a sacramental. It is the custom to mark the main door of the home with the blessed chalk. This may be done by the head of the household while saying a prayer. It should look like this:

20  C + M + B   10

The letters C M B are the initials of the names traditionally given to the three Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasaar. They also stand for the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat, ‘May Christ bless this house’.

Suggested prayer:
The three Wise Men, Caspar + Melchior + Balthasaar, followed the star of God’s Son, Who became man 20 hundred and 10 years ago. May Christ our King bless our home, protect us, and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

A Child is born in Bethlehem. Alleluia!

When the secular world starts putting its ‘holiday’ things away, and as shopping malls stop blaring ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’, Catholics should just be getting started their celebration of Christ’s birth! The cleaning and baking during penitential Advent pays off now, and the feasting and carolling begin. The days from the Feast of the Nativity to the Epiphany are known as ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, with Christmas itself being the first day, and Twelfthnight (5 January) being the last of the twelve days. But Christmas doesn’t end spiritually: the celebration of the events of Christ’s life as a child doesn’t end with Epiphany, and the great Christmas Cycle doesn’t really conclude until Candlemas Day on 2 February (Feast of the Purification of Our Lady) and the beginning of the Season of Septuagesima.

Epiphany house blessings

Homes are traditionally blessed during the Octave of Epiphany (6–13 January). The blessing  is done with exorcised Epiphany Holy Water, blessed chalk, and exorcised incense (frankincense with myrrh).

Since for the most part we all live quite a distance from one another, priority will be given to homes that haven’t yet been blessed, then to those that have not been blessed in a very long time. We would like to group the blessings for regions—i.e. Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, Abbotsford—on certain days insofar as this is possible .

Should the times available not be convenient fo ryou, we can always come by to bless your home later in the year with the regular blessing. Contact the Parish Office to book a day and time.
